- 0:08Now it's kind of eerie in here.
- 0:13Action!
- 0:20All great societies build their foundations based on agricultural excellence.
- 0:25Without that foundation, everything else can't be done.
- 0:28I worked here from the beginning of the company, starting in 2014.
- 0:38We started, it was in a small little hoop house with chicken wire on the side.
- 0:44Built out of pallet walls, wood pallets on the ground.
- 0:51And I remember the day we had to do the germination, and a pipe burst in the field that flooded overnight.
- 0:58Felt like a disaster. We ended up doing the entire germination on that seedling set.
- 1:03We kept pushing through.
- 1:06And that's where we found Adelanto.
- 1:10We named it Adelanto to kind of represent forward. We're moving forward.
- 1:17We were going to do that by releasing a variety that California hasn't had bred for itself in California, maybe ever.
- 1:25The opportunity here at California Berry Cultivars was really to be larger, to do a lot more.
- 1:31It was to build a business, build all these resources, to provide more access to new varieties than the industries have before.
- 1:39Just because we are a smaller company, the scale that we work through is enormous.
- 1:45We're focused on the farm, focused on the agronomy, the horticulture, and we lay over the top of that the science of quantitative genetics.
- 1:53We're innovative in trying new techniques to get the most out of every cultivar.
- 2:04We're just paying attention a lot to the horticulture, not just the breeding and genetics.
- 2:09We're developing cultivars that can ship across the country.
- 2:14Giving that to the growers, it allows them to be able to better enhance what they're doing with our product and not just releasing something without information.
- 2:23You know, a grower, they put their livelihoods into it.
- 2:26And at the very beginning, that's a risk.
- 2:28We want to make growers more money. That's the big thing.
- 2:31We believe that it's going to be more economical to get strawberries out to more people at a better price.
- 2:39We want to be number one.
- 2:40We really have that ambition.
- 2:43There's a drive here, and it's inescapable.
- 2:46There's been a lot of challenges, and come out of a lot of that with the momentum that we have is very impressive.
- 2:51The coolest part about CBC is the people that work here on our team are the same way.
- 2:58CBC is a feeling.
- 3:00It's why you wake up at 3 a.m. and write something down.
- 3:03What gets me up is just the love of the work.
- 3:05The competitive drive to be the best, that's the biggest thing.
- 3:09You have to continue to fight against the tide.
- 3:11Today, we're over half of the state of Baja California.
- 3:14We have all over the world: Australia, Spain, Mexico.
- 3:18We've come a long way.
- 3:19It's awesome.
